Prithvi mahabhuta (पृथ्वी महाभूत)

Dear learner, welcome to Sanskrit Gurukul. In this post, we will study Prithvi Mahabhuta(पृथ्वी महाभूत). This topic is part of Padarth Vigyan’s notes, BAMS first-year course. In this third chapter, Dravya Nirupana, we have already covered the following topics:

Prithvi mahabhuta, ayurveda notes, padarth vigyan notes

PRITHVI NIRUPANA

Prithvi is the last one of Chaturvimshati Tattva of an evolutionary process and the 5th Karana dravya

Prithvi mahabhuta (पृथ्वी महाभूत)

It is derived from (or produced from) Jala.

Prithvi mahabhuta (पृथ्वी महाभूत)

The Gandha guna Prithvi is derived from Jala,

Prithvi mahabhuta (पृथ्वी महाभूत)

The Prithvi possess Tamo guna predominantly.

Prithvi mahabhuta (पृथ्वी महाभूत)

It possesses the qualities like Rupa, Rasa, Gandha, and Sparsha.

The Phena (foam) of seawater becomes hard and becomes Prithvi.

Description

It is the 24th factor of (Chaturvimshati tattva) evolution.

Different types of Evolution

  • It is derived from Jala (Taittiriya Upanishad)
    Brahma → Atma → Akasha → Vayu → Teja → Jala → Prithvi
  • From Gandha Tanmatra (Sankhya Darshana)
  • From Gạndha guna Paramanu. (as per Vaisheshika Darshana)
  • From Panchikarana of Pancha Mahabhutas, ½ Gandha guna and ½ other 4 Mahabhutas (Ayurveda)

Gandha guna is present in it with inseparable relation (Karikavali). Tano guna is present in it predominantly (Sushruta), the foam of seawater becomes hard and produces Prithvi (Brihadaranyak Upanishad) and it contains Rupa, Rasa, Gadha, Sparsha (Vaisheshik Darshan).

It possesses Tamo guna hence it becomes Sthula, Guru, avaranak, a component of Sthulabhuta or Murta dravya.

It possesses 6 Rasa, 2 Gandha (Sugandha and Durgandha), Anushnāshita (neither hot nor cold), Pakaja, Sparshavat, Nitya, Anitya and Sharira, Indriya and Vishaya (मुक्त्तावली).

Gandha guna is the special quality of Prithvi because this quality doesn’t persist in any other bhuta and the other 3 qualities (Rupa, Rasa, Sparsha) or received from previous bhutas (Teja, Jala, Vayu) in the form of “Anupravesha”.

The Qualities of Prithvi

As per Prashastapada the commentator of Vaisheshika Darshana, the Prithvi possesses 14 gunas they are :

  • Rupa (appearance),
  • Rasa(taste)
  • Gandha (smell),
  • Sparsha (touch),
  • Samkhya(number),
  • Parimana(measurement),
  • Prithaktwa(distinction),
  • Samyoga(combination),
  • Vibhaga (division)
  • Paratwa(superiority),
  • Aparatwa (inferiority),
  • Gurutwa(heaviness),
  • Dravatva(fluidity),
  • Samskara(impulse,urge).

All these 14 qualities are present in Prithvi with Samavaya (concomitant) relation.

Bheda of Prithvi : (Types of Prithvi)

  • Nitya (eternal) Prithvi: It is Paramanurupa (atomic form) Prithvi, it is commonly seen at the time of Pralaya (involution of creation), it is eternal and non-transformable (Aparinamashila).
  • Anitya Prithvi: It is seen in Karyarupa Prithvi, it is Parinamakari, meaning it changes into different states hence said as transient or Anitya.

Anitya Prithvi further divided into 3 types they are :

  1. Sharira-samjnak Prithvi: It is subdivided into 2 types :
    1. Yonija,
    2. Ayonija
  • Yonija Sharira Prithvi: It is the Sharira formed due to the combination of Shukra (sperm) and Shonita (ovum), it is of 2 types, Jarayuj and Andaja. The Jarayuja means placental origin (Ex. – humans and animals) and Andaja means eggs origin. (Ex. – birds and serpents).
  • Ayonija Sharira Prithvi: It is the Sharira formed not due to the combination of Shukra and Shonita (ovum) but due to Dharma-vishishta Anusamyoga (Deva-Rishi etc.,) and Adharma-vishishta Anusamyoga like insects (Ex. – Yuka, Liksha, etc.)

Note: Swedaja and Audbija can be grouped in Ayonija only.

  1. Indriya-samjnaka Prithvi: The Ghranendriya (nose) receives the Gandha guna of Prithvi.
  2. Vishaya-samjnaka Prithvi: It is Karyarupa Prithvi, it is of 3 types, they are:
    1. Mrit (clay) (soil/bricks etc),
    2. Pashana (stones/pearls),
    3. Sthavara (plants).

Importance of Prithvi in Ayurveda

The importance of Prithvi in Ayurveda is as under-

  1. As a precursor of Kapha dosha: The Kapha dosha owes its origin to the Jala and Prithvi Mahabhuta. The Prithvi Mahabhuta provides the base for the sleshma which is responsible for the strength of the body.
  2. Rasautpatti: The madhura rasa (sweet taste) is formed from the Prithvi and Jala Mahabhuta, and amla (sour taste) rasa is formed from agni and Prithvi mahabhuta. In contrast, the Kashya rasa (astringent taste) originates from the Prithvi and vayu mahabhuta.
  3. The Prithvi bhava in the body: The factors that are sthoola (gross), sthira (stable), moortimana (formed structures), guru (heavy), Khara (rough), and kathina (hard) like the nails, bones, teeth, flesh, skin, feces, scalp hair, body hair along with mustache-beard, and tendons are Prithiva along with the gandha (smell) and Ghranendriya (nose).
  4. In the treatment: The Prithvi mahabhuta dominant dravyas are sthoola (gross), Sandra (concentrated), manda (slow), sthira (stable), guru (heavy), kathina (hard), gandha (odor), ishat kashaya (mild astringent), and generally sweet in taste. These qualities enable them to be used to provide strength and stability to the body. The dravyas having these attributes generally have the tendency to move downwards. So, this quality is utilized in the virecana (purgation) karma.

In this way, the Panchamahabhuta have their peculiar attributes and they bring about a variety of actions on the basis of various combinations and manifestations. They are the most essential elements to be taken care of while thinking of health in terms of diet and medicine.
