jal mahabhuta adarth vigayan notes

JAL NIRUPANA

It is one among the Panchamahabhutas and it is the 4th Karana dravya.

jal mahabhuta, padarth vigyan notes

The Jal mahabhuta is formed from the Agni mahabhuta. (Taitiriyopanishad).
It originates from the rasa tanmatra. The entire universe attains liquidity (Jalatwa or dravatwa) through Agni. The solids when heated in the air become liquid. It means Tejo dhatu gives the state of liquidity to Padartha.

jal mahabhuta, padarth vigyan notes

Ap or Jal < Tejas < Vayu < Akasha (Paramanu rupa)

Hence it contains Rasa, Rupa Sparsha as special features and Dravatva-Snehatwa as prominent features.

It contains Sattva guna and Tamo guna predominantly (Sushruta).

It contains Shveta (white) varna, Madhura rasa (sweet taste), and sheeta (cold) sparsha. Any variations that occur in color, or taste, it is due to the collection of impurities.

The 14 qualities of Jal as per Prashastapada :

  • Rupa(appearance),
  • Rasa(taste),
  • Sparsha(touch), Vishesha guna
  • Dravatva(fluidity),
  • Snehatva(unctuousness), Jal-pradhana Lakshana
  • Gurutva (heaviness) Due to Tamo guna
  • Samskara (impulse) Bhuta-anupravesha Lakshana
  • Sankhya(number),
  • Pramana(measurement),
  • Prithakatva(distinction),
  • Samyoga(combination),
  • Vibhaga(division),
  • Paratva(superiority),
  • Aparatva (inferiority) Received from Tejobhuta ((Chakshurindriya)

Types of Jal

It is of 2 types: 1) Nitya, 2) Anitya.

  • Nitya jal is in Paramanurupa (atomic form).
  • Anitya jal is in Karyarupa

Anitya jal is further divided into three types, they are :

  • Sharira,
  • Indriya,
  • Vishaya.
  • Sharīra jal: It is Ayonija and resides in Varuna Loka.
  • Indriya jal: It is Rasanendriya (tongue), and its main quality is Rasa-grahana. (Taste perception).
  • Vishaya jal: Sea, rivers, lakes, and wells.

Four Sources or positions of Jal

  • Ambha: It is present in Akash above the level of Surya-Mandal (site of Paramatma), it is known as “Soma” or Amrita jal, it is Sukshma Paramanurupa, it is being boiled by Surya-Rashmi.
  • Marichi: It is present in Akash, in between earth and Surya-Mandal, the Sunlight comes to earth by traveling through this water.
  • Mara: It is the water present on earth originating from the combination of the above two, it is Sthula bhuta jal.
  • Ap: It is the water present in the internal surface of the earth.

In the above, the 1-2 are known as Antariksha jal, the 3rd one is rivers and lakes and the 4th one is the well water.

Apyātmaka bhava in Sharira

Rasanendriya, Sweda, Kleda, Vasa, Rakta, Mutra, Sheetattva, Snehatwa, Dravatva, Eka, Mridu, etc are Lakshana.

Importance of Jal in Ayurveda

The importance of Jal in Ayurveda is as under-

  • As a precursor of the Kapha. The Kapha dosha owes its origin to mainly the jal mahabhuta. The Kapha is responsible for the strength of the body. The madhura rasa is especially Kapha prakopa.
  • Rasa utpatti- The madhura rasa (sweet taste) is formed from the Prithvi and Jal mahabhuta and the lavana rasa (salt taste) is formed from the Agni and Jal mahabhuta.
  • The Jaleeya bhava in the body- The factors that are dravya (fluid), Sara (mobile), manda (slow or mild), Snigdha (unctuous), mrdu (soft), and picchila (slimy) like the rasa, rakta, vasa, Kapha, Pitta, mootra, Sweda, etc along with rasa (taste) and rasendriya (tongue) are attributed to the Jal mahabhuta.
  • In the treatment- The Jal mahabhuta dominant dravya are Seeta (cold), stimita (stagnant), Snigdha (unctuous), manda (slow or mild), guru (heavy), Sara (mobile), Sandra (concentrated), mrdu (soft), picchila (slimy), rasabahulam (very juicy), isat kashaya-amla-lavana (mild astringent-sour-salty) and generally madhura (sweet). They are used to produce unctuousness, pleasure, moisture, bonding, and secretion in the body.

jal mahabhuta, padarth vigyan notes

jal mahabhuta, padarth vigyan notes
