Ayurveda- a unique and independent school of Darshan

Topic: Ayurveda as a unique and independent school of thought (philosophical individuality of Ayurveda)
Subject: Padarth Vigyan Part-I
Chapter: Ayurveda Darshana Nirupana
Course: BAMS First year

Dear learner, Welcome to Sanskrit Gurukul. In this post, we will study Ayurveda as a unique and individual Darshan. This topic is the part of Padarth Vigyan’s notes, BAMS first-year course. In this second chapter, Ayurveda Darshna Nirupana, we have already covered the following topics:

Ayurveda- a unique and independent Darshan

The influence of all darshans on Ayurveda can be seen. But Ayurveda, having its own philosophical base and differing views, becomes an independent philosophy.

Ayurveda, padarth vigyan noted, independent darshan

Aims and Objectives

Like other Astika Darshana, Ayurveda also has its main subject medicine. The main purpose of Ayurveda is to protect the health of the healthy and eradicate the disease of the diseased. Ayurveda is a sub-Veda of Atharvaveda. The Darshana however aims to eradicate the sufferings of the world once and for all by attaining the Moksa/Liberation. So in spite of the unity of the two, both maintain their unique traits.

Also, the main purpose of Ayurveda is to maintain a balance between the mind, soul, body, and senses by achieving salvation along with the prevention of diseases.

Pramana as Pareeksa

In Darshana, the Pramanas were described to acquire knowledge of the Tatwas (Realms) and possess specific knowledge about evolution. But according to Ayurveda, the Pramanas are useful in the examination of a patient, diagnosis of the disease, and treatment aspect. Charaka in the Fourth chapter of Vimana sthana, states that the means Anumana, Aptopadesha, and Pratyaksha are essential for getting the specific knowledge of the relation between the patient and the disease. A doctor can neither examine a patient nor diagnose the disease without the help of 3 Pramanas collectively. Likewise, the description of Pramanas in Ayurveda is entirely different than that of Darshana which is more theoretical.

The Sadh Padarth as Sadh Karan (Six causative factors)

The six padarth/categories of Vaisesika Darshana have been termed as six causative factors known as Sadh Karana in Ayurveda. Moreover, there is a sequential alteration in these six categories which justifies the independent thought of Ayurveda. Vaisesika Darshana states that Pramanas were described to prove the Samanyadi Sat Padarthas. But Ayurveda states that Sadh Padarthas are very useful to maintain swasth avastha or a healthy state and to cure the diseases. Charaka opines that Samnanya and other Padarthas are the causative factors for Dhatu Vaisamya as well as Dhatu Samya.

In Ayurveda, the Samanya is placed at the first position as it is the factor for increase which in fact is the cause of the disease that demands Ayurvedic interference. The Vesesika on the other hand places the dravyas as the first category considering it the substratum and the base of the other categories which is in accordance with its aim of attaining liberation. This difference of opinion reaffirms the Independent nature of Ayurveda

The acceptance of Indriya as Panchabhautika

Even though Charaka followed the evolution theory of Sankhya, out of the 25 Tatwas, he mentioned 24 Tatwas Only. Ayurveda described that Indriyas are born out of Pancamahabhutas, whereas in Samkhya Darshana they are born out of Ahamkara. The indriya if consider ahamkarika become untreatable while bhautikatva makes them treatable through the use of Panchabhautika medicines. This is a valuable basic contribution of Ayurveda toward the attainment of health. Charaka correlated them to a healthy state, the manifestation of diseases and treatment, etc.

Up-gradation of the Manas, the Manovijnana

Manas expounded in the Darshana has been developed as an indispensable branch of medicine under Manovijnana. The Manas is said to be one of the sites of the disease and the sharira and manas are said to complement each other. The treatment of the manoroga (mental/psychiatric disorder) has been explained in the Ayurveda as a Sattvavajaya chikitsa. Contemporary science also accepts the psyche as an important entity malfunction that leads to a number of diseases.

Dharma

The Ayurveda classics have stressed the Dharma which is an integral part of the Darshana. But the Dharma in the Ayurveda has been associated with the medical ethics of Achara. All the renowned Acharyas of Ayurveda have envisaged the strict adherence to the medical ethics that are obligatory for the proper doctor-patient relationship which suits this noble profession.

Paramatma/Brahma/Atma

The Ayurveda like the Vedanta Darshana approves of the existence of the Paramatma. But is in the agreement with its aim and objectives. Ayurveda adopts a rational approach. The Lakshna and Atma are explained in a scientific and practical manner. The Atma is said to be the cause of Life and the exodus of the same from the living body is considered death. This approach reaffirms the independent and pragmatic approach of Ayurveda.

To conclude, Ayurveda though influenced by the various philosophies, has retained its independent position as its vision is novel in tandem with its aims and objectives revolving around the achievement of health. The pragmatic approach of Ayurveda revolves around the concepts of health maintenance while the philosophical tenets deal with spirituality as their core issue. Also. Ayurveda is mainly the Astika individual Darshan as the seers have vehemently refuted the Nastika darshan.
