Hello learners, Welcome to Sanskrit Gurukul. In this post, we will learn about Vaisesika Darshan and its influence on Ayurveda philosophy. In this chapter of Ayurveda darshan Nirupana subjects we have learned about the following topics :

Vaisesika Darshan

Vaisesika Darshan is one of the six Astika Indian Darshana. Astika Darshana believes in the authority of the Vedas and tries to organize the meaning of the Vedic teachings. Other Astika Darshana include Nyaya, Yoga, Samkhya, Purva Mimamsa and Uttara Mimamsa.

Vaisesika Darshana, Sanskrit, Ayurveda, BAMS

Vaisesika Darshan was written by Kanada Rishi, son of Aulukya Maharishi of Kashyapa gotra. All can recognize the Padartha (matter) in the sunlight and differentiate between the two things, but the owl can recognize and differentiate the Padartha in the night as well, so it is called Aulukya Darshana. The main purpose of this Darshana is to highlight the Padartha which helps in the development of life.
Vaisesika darshan is called so because it highlighted the description of ‘Vihesha’ of Shat padarth. He explained Shat bhava Padartha, they are dravya, Guna, Karma, Samanya, Vishesha, and Samavaya. It also describes Nava Karna Dravya as the basic elements to cause the creation which are panch mahabhuta, Atma(soul), Manas(mind), Kala(time), and Dik. Vaisheshika Darshan believes in Arambhawada and explained in detail the theory of Paramanuvada.
2 out of the 4 pramana are accepted which are Pratyaksha (perception), and Anumana (Inference). Shabda and Upamana are considered under Anumana Pramana. It explained a total of 24 Gunas (17 original and 7 added by commentators) known as Vaisesika Gunas.

It contain 10 chapter as follows:

6th chapter is about Veda- pramanya, Dharma, Adharma.

Relevance of Vaisheshika Darshana in Ayurveda

  • Vaishesha tatwa has an important role in Ayurveda, it is implemented to reduce the aggravating factors by selecting the opposite principles.
  • It also accepted the Shat padartha but in a different sequence.
  • In the cause of creation, there is similarity, both believed that the creation is created from Mula Prakriti or Avyakta.
  • Both accepted the theory of Nava karana dravya, and Paramanu vada.
  • Ayurveda accepts the atomic theory, the concept of Triguna, etc of Vaisheshika Darshana. The principle mentioned in Vaisheshik Darshan on how to treat aggravated factors by making use of opposite factors is accepted and utilized in Ayurvedic treatment Ayurveda accepts the theory of 6 factors (Shat padarthas. The five types of actions (karmas) stated by Vaisesik Darsan is accepted by Ayurveda. Both Ayurveda and Vaisheshika Darshana believe in the eternity of soul (Nityatva of Atma) and minuteness of the mind (Anutva of Manas).
