Samkhya Darshana (सांख्य दर्शन)- Padarth Vigyan (पदार्थ विज्ञान)-BAMS

Hello learners, welcome to Sanskrit gurukul. In this post, we will learn about Samkhya Darshana and its influence on Ayurveda. In the previous post we have learned about the following topics:

Samkhya Darshana (सांख्य दर्शन)

Samkhya Darshana (सांख्य दर्शन)- Padarth Vigyan (पदार्थ विज्ञान)-BAMS

The Samkhya Darshana was composed by Kapil Muni. The word Samkhya is derived from the word number. It has been called Samkhya Darshana because of giving an overview of the number of 25 elements, explaining the nature (Prakriti) and the Purusha, the result and the characteristics of the three gunas, Satyakaryavada, and the special principle of salvation
Some Acharya’s say that the following 25 elements of the universe were first mentioned in this philosophy, due to this number 25 it is called Samkhya Darshana. The goal of which is to contemplate spirituality and Adhibhuta to the last level and to clarify their relationship.

Kapil Muni is said to be the fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu in Shrimad Bhagwat. It is also said in the Vedas that the Supreme Lord had first filled Kapil Muni with knowledge.

Samkhya philosophy believes in dualism. According to this, the root cause of the creation of the universe is the triple nature and the two elements. In this Prakrti is inactive and Purusha is conscious.

In the Samkhya philosophy, twenty-five elements have been described as the avyakta name mula Prakrti (nature), Mahan, Ahankara, the five elements, the five mahabhutas, the eleven indriyas (senses) and the Purusha.

Samkhaya Darshana and 25 tatwa

In samkhaya darshana 25 principles are explains which are responsible for creation of everything present in this universe. They are categorized in four groups-

  • Prakruti – which gives birth to another
  • Vikruti – which takes birth from another
  • Prakruti-Vikruti – which gives and takes birth,
  • Neither Prakruti nor Vikruti – which neither gives nor takes birth.

Avyakta considered as Prakruti which is one in number. Mahat- Ahamkar and panch tanmatra considered as both Prakruti and Vikruti which are 7 in numbers. Eleven indriyas ( senses), panchamahaabhut (five elements) are considered as  Vikruti which are 16 in numbers and lastly Purush is considered as neither Prakruti nor Vikruti which is one in number. This makes the total of 25 panchavimshati tatwa (25 principles) of Samkhya darshana.

Vyakta can be perceived and Avyakta means which cannot be perceived. Unless we have a higher level of spirituality and intellect, it is impossible to perceive Avyakta. Avyakta is also considered Prakruti, which is infinite, inactive, and unconscious and is the most subtle element for all the creations of the physical universe. When Prakruti comes in contact with Purush (consciousness) gives rise to the manifestation of expression through 23 tatwa.

Prakruti is an equilibrium state of all the 3 tatwa viz satwa, rajas and tamas.

Mahat

Prakruti gives rise to mahat which is the next level of expression. It is tatwa (principle) responsible for buddhi (intelligence) in all living beings. Every creature on this earth has its own basic instincts and intelligence. A newborn baby knows, how to cry, how to smile etc. This basic intelligence is because of Mahat. Mahat gives rise to Ahamkar.

Ahamkar (Individuality)

It’s is responsible for the self-sense in living beings. Ahamkara is made of two words, aham means I, and kara mean to do. Ahamkara is a subjective state of illusion, where the mind has bound the concept of one’s self with an external thing. The ego is involved in the construction of this illusion. Also, ego is required for all living beings to exist. Without ego, no creature will be interested to take care of itself.

Again, ego is of three kinds:

  • Satvik ahamkara (satvik ego)- poise, fineness, lightness, illumination, and joy, knowledge discipline, peace , wisdom- can be used to describe satva.
  • Rajasika ahamkara (Rajasika ego) – desire, money, attraction, greed, pain, excitation, pain, egotism can be few terms to describe Rajas.
  • Tamasika Ahamkara ( Tamasik ego) – Darkness, lethargy, heaviness, sleep, and jealousy can be few words to describe the tamas.

Mahat (intellect) and Ahamkara (ego) give rise to Panch tanmatra( five forms) –
• Shabd( sound)
• Sparsh (touch)
• Rupa (form)
• Rasa (taste)
• Gandh (smell)
The Rajas and tamas Ahamkara give rise to panch tanmatras.

Again the Panch tanmatra give rise to panch mahabutas which are:

  • Prithvi (earth)
  • Jal (water)
  • Tejas (fire)
  • Vayu (air)
  • Akash (space)
All the things in this universe is made up of these basic five elements. These five elements in minute form (panch tanmatra) and in macro form (panch mahabhut) are born out of rajas and tamas form of Ahamkara.

Ekadash indriya

Mind– Manas is the connecting link between the sense organs and intellect. With the presence of the mind, we can perceive things and understand them better. Mind is arising out of satwik ahamkara.

Pancha Jana indriyas (five sense organ) – Ear, eyes, skin, tongue, and nose. These Jana indriyas evolve from the satwa aspects of Ahamkara.

Pancha karma indriyas (Five organs of action) – Hands, legs, mouth, genital organs, anus. These are evolved from the rajasik aspects of Ahamkara.

It is the last element. It possesses the following quality- Nirguna, nirvikar, nirlep, niranjan, Sakshi.

In this way the

  • Avyakta (Prakruti), Mahat, Ahamkara
  • 11 organs (5 sense, 5 motor, and mind)
  • 5 tanmatra
  • 5 pancha mahabhuta
  • 1 purusha (soul)

Comprises the 25 tatwa explained in samkhya darshana.

Ayurveda and Samkhya darshana(आयुर्वेद और सांख्य दर्शन)

The concepts of pramana are explained in similar ways in both the science.

Purush, Prakruti and other tatwas are discussed in Sushrat, Charak and Samkhya darshana.

Parinaam vada, satkarya vada , Triguna, all the theories are explained in Ayurveda on the same line as explained in Samkhya darshana.
